Just smile and nod...

So, apparently I offended quite a few people with my
"things I'd like to say to homeschooling mommas" post.
Yikes. Sorry about that...

Soooo...
instead of that crazy-honestly-sharing-from-my-heart stuff...
here's some pictures of the first day of school! Yay!
"zero calorie blog posting! none of that filling stuff weighing you down!"
Sweet baby girl - first day of high school! (She does have arms.)

  1. Girl, I grew up homeschooled and send my kids to public school. I hear you. I still feel that way even with my OWN background of being homeschooled, but thankfully I'm coping with it well. we did it for a year and a half, and it just isn't what's right for our family. Good for you for putting it out there.

NOW...How did you enjoy that FIRST DAY yourself??? Did you get some time to sit down and drink some coffee???

  3. I wish you hadn't taken down the school post. It inspired me to start a post about our school situation. I have kids in public, private, and home schools this year!

  4. I also wished you hadn't taken down the school post. I am a homeschooling Mom of 4 children and I agree with EVERYTHING you said. I was going to share your notes with my fellow friends. You know, sometimes the truth hurts. We do live in America and for right now, we are allowed to freedom of speech! REPOST the post, it was GREAT!

  5. I too am sad that you were put in a position where you felt the need to take down your thoughts on homeschooling. I greatly appreciated them and thank you for your honesty.

  6. I've been on both sides of the 'fence' and agree with most of what you posted. I homeschooled our children for 21 years, then the younger ones went to public school on a staggered enrollment process (Still had 5 at home then) and I started substitute teaching after enrolling the last two. I was inspired to return to college to obtain a teaching degree because of the needs I saw in the schools. Every family is not cut out for homeschooling. Kudos to those who make it work well, and I've seen plenty of those. The most important issue here is what you said in the end, it's all about what works best for our families, and doing what we can to bring up our children to the best of our abilities.

  7. As a public school teacher and wife to a man who was home-schooled K-12 (except a small tragedy at a private school in 3rd grade), I loved your last post. I'm sad it's gone; I'd already forwarded the link to a few people, hoping that too could enjoy. I'm thankful we live in a place where people can choose what type of education makes the most sense for their family. Thank you for speaking up for those of us who choose to spend our lives supporting kids and families who enjoy the privilege of free public education. (and thanks a million for being the mom who gives us a heads up if the day is looking rough ahead!)

  8. Like others, I hope you will repost. You had so many aspects of why public school is a great choice, especially for kids who are adopted at older ages and for older kids who suddenly have more siblings (I loved what you said about how each child gets to feel like an individual in their classroom). I also loved your thoughts on wonderful teachers, since public school teachers often get only negative print. One of the reasons I like your blog is that you aren't afraid to say the truth of your heart. We have mostly public schooled but also homeschooled and I believe one is always better than the other--depending on the child and the circumstances currently surrounding their lives and our family.

  9. how was the first day? did they love it? i think i might throw up for my boys. i'm obviously having some unnecessary mommy anxiety for the first day of american school. please convince me it will be full of hearts and unicorns and rainbows. or because they're boys maybe soccer and fist bumps and new friends.

  10. Oh my goodness. That is too funny! You have no idea who I am, though we share a mutual friend in Shauna. :-) But I started reading your blog through her blog. And as I was scrolling through your pictures, I just realized our sons are in class together!! In fact, he's sitting in the background of your picture (the blonde-haired boy in the blue shirt with superheros on it). He thought it was funny to see one of his friends from class sitting in your picture. Just wanted to say Hello and that I'm really enjoying your blog. You amaze me!

  11. PS. I'm not sure if you have to have a paid account, but Sojourners magazine's front cover is about public education: http://sojo.net/magazine/2012/09/behold-dreamer-cometh If you can't get that to work, let me know and I'd happily send you my copy!! cferg7@gmail.com
